New Delhi, Oct 30 (NationPress) The Central Government has officially approved the designation of Supreme Court Justice Surya Kant as the forthcoming Chief Justice of India (CJI).
"Utilizing the authority granted by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is delighted to appoint Shri Justice Surya Kant, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, as the Chief Justice of India effective from November 24, 2025," stated a release from the Union Ministry of Law and Justice.
The current CJI Bhushan R. Gavai is scheduled to retire on November 23, having reached the age of 65.
Justice Gavai had previously endorsed Justice Kant as his successor, adhering to the long-standing tradition of designating the most senior judge of the Supreme Court to the role of Chief Justice of India.
Justice Kant, who will be the 53rd Chief Justice of India, is set to serve for approximately 14 months, concluding his term on February 9, 2027.
Born on February 10, 1962, into a middle-class family in Haryana, Justice Surya Kant completed his undergraduate studies at Government Post Graduate College, Hisar, in 1981, followed by a law degree from Maharishi Dayanand University, Rohtak, in 1984.
He commenced his legal career in Hisar in 1984, later relocating to Chandigarh to practice at the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Throughout his career, he has dealt with a diverse array of constitutional, service, and civil cases, representing universities, boards, corporations, banks, and even the High Court.
Justice Kant was appointed the youngest Advocate General of Haryana on July 7, 2000, and became a senior advocate in March 2001.
He was elevated to a permanent judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on January 9, 2004.
He later served as Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court from October 5, 2018, until his promotion to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019.
Justice Kant has also been involved with various legal and judicial service organizations. He was a member of the Governing Body of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) for two consecutive terms from 2007 to 2011 and is currently a member of several committees at the Indian Law Institute, a deemed university operating under the Supreme Court of India.
