What Awkward Moment Did Kal Penn Experience During His 'Van Wilder' Audition?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Los Angeles, Feb 12 (NationPress) Kal Penn, an American actor of Indian heritage, gained fame for his role as Taj Mahal Badalandabad in the 2002 comedy classic “National Lampoon’s Van Wilder.” Recently, he shared an awkward experience from the audition process for the film.
As the auditions concluded, Penn found himself up against another actor, which motivated him to strive harder for the role. He recounted this peculiar moment on the podcast “Hasan Minhaj Doesn’t Know,” as reported by Variety.
“I realized that it was down to me and another person,” he explained. “I was thrilled that one of us would land the part. Then, I opened the door and saw a white actor in brownface waiting in the room.”
Penn continued, “I generally don’t have issues with fellow actors; we’re all just trying to secure roles. But I was genuinely intrigued by the situation.”
“I thought, ‘Did his agent suggest he paint his face? Did he do it at home or in the bathroom? If done at home, would it increase his chances of getting stopped by the police?’ So many questions crossed my mind.”
Despite the initial shock, Penn mentioned that he engaged in small talk with the actor that day and even spent time with him later. However, he noted that this encounter fueled his determination to get the part.
“Looking back, it’s shocking to think that people engaged in brownface,” he remarked. “For instance, the recent ‘Aladdin’ had extras in brownface. While it may occur differently now, it was prevalent then. I distinctly remember thinking while conversing with him, ‘He cannot get that role.'”
Directed by Walt Becker, the film features Ryan Reynolds as the main character, alongside Tara Reid, Tim Matheson, and Paul Gleason.
The storyline revolves around Vance "Van" Wilder, a charming and popular 7th-year senior at Coolidge College who is in no rush to graduate, preferring to continue his life as a party planner and student mentor.
