All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Kalyan Banerjee was suspended from the Lok Sabha for the remainder of the Monsoon Session on Wednesday, 22 July, after the Nationalist Citizens Party of India (NCPI) filed a formal complaint with Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, alleging that Banerjee had directed abusive language at the party's MPs — including a woman MP — during proceedings inside the House. The suspension was adopted through a voice vote and took immediate effect, with Banerjee directed to vacate Parliament premises.

What Triggered the Confrontation

The incident stemmed from a heated verbal altercation between Banerjee and a group of his former party colleagues, who are now members of the NCPI, inside the Lok Sabha chamber following an earlier adjournment of the House. The exchange reportedly involved objectionable remarks directed at a woman MP of the NCPI. The precise reason behind the confrontation was not immediately disclosed by any party.

Following the altercation, NCPI members met Speaker Om Birla in his chamber and submitted a written complaint formally seeking action against Banerjee.

How the Suspension Was Moved

When the House reconvened, the Chair — presided over by Krishna Prasad Tenneti — directed Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju to initiate appropriate action against Banerjee over the alleged remarks. In response, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal moved a resolution seeking Banerjee's suspension for the balance of the Monsoon Session. The House adopted the resolution by a voice vote, after which Banerjee was formally suspended and asked to leave Parliament with immediate effect.

Opposition Disruptions Compound the Disorder

The suspension proceedings unfolded against a backdrop of broader parliamentary turbulence. When the Lok Sabha reconvened after the earlier adjournment, Opposition members continued raising slogans and disrupting proceedings. Tenneti repeatedly appealed to Opposition MPs to return to their seats, noting that Speaker Birla had directed the House to proceed with scheduled business and that notices seeking discussions would not be taken up. The appeals went unheeded.

After completing the suspension proceedings, the Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day amid the continuing Opposition ruckus.
