Kannur (Kerala), Aug 6 (NationPress) - On Wednesday, tensions erupted at Kannur University during the union elections as violence broke out between SFI (Students' Federation of India) and UDSF (United Democratic Students’ Front) members. The clashes primarily involved SFI and opposing factions, including the Muslim Student Federation (MSF) and Kerala Students Union (KSU).
The conflict escalated from the start of polling, resulting in several police lathi charges on campus. Numerous students from both sides sustained injuries during the altercations.
Amid the chaos, a significant incident occurred when SFI joint secretary candidate, K. Adhisha, was accused of seizing a ballot from an MSF-affiliated female university councilor. Following the complaint, the police quickly detained Adhisha.
Shortly after, a contingent of SFI activists, led by SFI state secretary P.S. Sanjeev, forcefully intervened and liberated Adhisha from police custody, further intensifying the unrest.
During the fracas, a police officer was also injured.
Sanjeev claimed that UDSF members were attempting to engage in fraudulent voting, which sparked the initial confrontation. He further accused the police of an unwarranted lathi charge on SFI supporters, leading to injuries among them.
Conversely, UDSF members alleged that they faced aggression from both the police and SFI activists during the turmoil.
SFI supporters have expressed concerns that the police are acting in favor of rival student groups, particularly the MSF, alleging partiality in their actions on campus.
As election-related tensions rise, university officials and law enforcement agencies are under pressure to ensure a peaceful election process and manage disputes fairly.
The unrest began around 9 a.m., prompting the deployment of additional police forces as vote counting is scheduled for later in the day.
During the chaos, equipment belonging to media outlets was also damaged.
Meanwhile, senior district leaders from all major political parties have arrived on campus to help deescalate the situation.
The Kannur University union elections encompass colleges across the Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasargod districts.
