Thousands of Kanwariyas converged on the Ganga Canal camps in Muradnagar, Ghaziabad on Saturday, 8 August, as the annual Kanwar Yatra continued in full fervour. The stretch, popularly known as 'Mini-Haridwar', has emerged as a key rest point for pilgrims making their way back from the sacred ghats of Uttarakhand.

Facilities on the Ground

Pilgrims at the Muradnagar camps were seen availing themselves of food, drinking water, medical aid, and rest facilities provided at designated stops. Security arrangements included heavy police deployment and CCTV surveillance monitored through a dedicated control room, ensuring safe passage for the large influx of devotees.

What Devotees Said

Several pilgrims praised the on-ground management. One devotee, who began the journey from Haridwar on 2 August, said the arrangements under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's administration were 'very good.' Another pilgrim, undertaking his second Kanwar Yatra after starting on 1 August, noted that despite one member of his group getting separated en route, the remaining three had travelled comfortably. 'It is all due to Lord Shiva's blessings. The arrangements made by the government are excellent,' he said.

A third devotee acknowledged minor leg pain from long-distance walking but confirmed that medical supplies and food had been readily available throughout the journey. Hari Om Gupta, a volunteer with Mitra Kanwar Seva Samiti in Muradnagar, noted that while parts of the route through Uttarakhand presented some difficulties, conditions improved significantly upon entering Uttar Pradesh. 'There are proper arrangements for lighting, accommodation, food, medical assistance, and other facilities,' he said.

Yatra Timeline and Peak

This year's Kanwar Yatra commenced on 30 July and is expected to peak on 11 August, coinciding with Sawan Shivratri — the day devotees traditionally offer sacred Ganga water at local Shiva temples to mark the culmination of the main rituals. The pilgrimage falls during the auspicious Hindu month of Sawan and attracts millions of devotees from across the country annually.

Key Pilgrimage Routes and Shrines

Haridwar, Gaumukh, and Gangotri in Uttarakhand serve as the principal water collection points for pilgrims. From there, devotees proceed towards prominent shrines including Neelkanth Mahadev in Rishikesh, Baba Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar, and Kashi Vishwanath in Varanasi. The pilgrimage transforms major highways and routes into vibrant corridors of worship, community service, and religious celebration. With Sawan Shivratri days away, the volume of pilgrims at transit points like Muradnagar is expected to rise further before the yatra reaches its ceremonial close.
