Bengaluru, Dec 4 (NationPress) The Karnataka BJP has called for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry into allegations of 63 percent corruption during the Congress-led government’s tenure.
Comments made by Karnataka Upalokayukta Justice B. Veerappa regarding the extent of corruption sparked a significant controversy on Thursday, putting the Congress government under considerable pressure.
During a press conference held at the state BJP headquarters, Jagannath Bhavan, Opposition Leader R. Ashoka stated, "The Upalokayukta's revelation of 63 percent corruption within the state government is a disgraceful ritual for the administration. If they possess any dignity, they should dissolve the government immediately."
He questioned, "You formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate a supposed 40 percent commission against us. What SIT will you now establish for the 63 percent corruption? If you have the guts, forward this investigation to the CBI," he urged.
He insisted that the corruption present in each department must be disclosed to the public.
Opposition leader Ashoka alleged that the Chairman of the Bhovi Corporation was demanding a commission of Rs 25 lakh per acre.
He pointed out that Rs 187 crore from the Valmiki Tribal Welfare Development Corporation had been distributed across nearly 700 accounts for use in the Bellary elections, which is currently being probed, leading to the resignation of Karnataka's Scheduled Tribes Welfare Minister B. Nagendra.
Referring to the Mysuru Urban Development Authority scam, the BJP leader claimed that 14 plots were illegally allocated and subsequently returned.
"A video circulating on social media alleges that bar licenses cost Rs 20 lakh. There’s also a Rs 90 crore scam involving transformers. A garbage machine costing Rs 98 lakh is being rented out for Rs 2.5 crore. This is not for public benefit, but for private profit," he charged.
He asserted that Karnataka has turned into the ATM of the Congress High Command.
"Only those who pay Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi receive power here," he claimed.
He further alleged that those who contribute more to the Gandhis remain in their positions.
"Recently, nearly Rs 300 crore from Karnataka was sent for the Bihar elections after breakfast meetings with ministers and gathering the funds. MLA 'Pappi' was found with 50 kg of gold; many remain imprisoned," he alleged, asserting that corruption is the Congress' family tradition.
"In light of the MUDA scam valued at Rs 3,000 crore and the Valmiki Corporation scandal, we organized large protests. At that time, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah repeatedly requested proof. Now, the incumbent Upalokayukta has compared this government to 'Alibaba and 34 thieves' engaging in 63 percent corruption," stated BJP leader Ashoka.
He noted that the BJP had previously claimed that the Congress-led Karnataka government was riddled with 60 percent corruption. Now, the very judge appointed as Upalokayukta by this government has echoed the same sentiment. On stage, judges and advocates remarked that nothing transpires without a commission and that Karnataka is presently ranked fifth in terms of corruption," he commented.
He reminisced about past posters labeling Siddaramaiah as a "Pay CM" and suggested, "Now, posters should be placed on your faces," targeting Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
In light of the 63 percent corruption claim, BJP leader Ashoka demanded that Siddaramaiah and his Cabinet feel shame.
"They (the Karnataka government) are putting on a performance of corruption," he alleged.
During the press conference, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Chalavadi Narayanaswamy and state spokesperson Prakash were also present.
The Upalokayukta's assertion that corruption in Karnataka is at 63 percent has left the state government in a defensive position, with the Bharatiya Janata Party launching a fierce critique against Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, demanding their resignation following the shocking revelation.
Justice Veerappa, speaking at a book release event, indicated that Kerala currently experiences around 10 percent corruption, while Karnataka is facing 63 percent.
He remarked, "I am witnessing this firsthand since becoming the Upalokayukta."
He further stated, "Corruption is widespread in every department in Karnataka. Karnataka is presently in fifth place regarding corruption. If this issue is not tackled promptly, it will jeopardize the future significantly."
His comments were made on Wednesday during the release of the book "Overseas Travelogue" by advocate Tulavanuru Shankarappa at the High Court Advocates' Auditorium and have since garnered significant attention.
