Is There an Excise Scam in Karnataka? BJP and JD(S) Call for Investigation
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Jan 27 (NationPress) The Karnataka BJP has called for an investigation by either a sitting High Court judge or the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding what they claim is an excise scam within the state.
In a media briefing, Karnataka BJP President and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra stated that the BJP and JD(S) are jointly protesting against what he described as a corrupt and immoral state government, gathering near the Mahatma Gandhi statue at the Vidhana Soudha.
The protest witnessed the presence of Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly R. Ashoka, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, along with JD(S) leaders Suresh Babu and Bhojegowda, and various MLAs and MLCs from both parties.
Vijayendra asserted that the name of the Excise Minister has surfaced in the alleged scam, and emphasized that despite this, the Chief Minister is preventing any discussion on the matter in the House.
He further stated that officials have found it nearly impossible to secure postings in the Excise Department without paying substantial bribes. “Consequently, the government has permitted liquor sales even in rural grocery stores and has allowed illegal liquor sales. This is how the state is enriching itself. Karnataka has never experienced such a shameless and disgraceful government in its history,” he remarked.
Vijayendra expressed that the public is disillusioned with the government, blaming the Chief Minister for ruining the lives of impoverished rural families by fixating on guarantees instead of prioritizing public welfare. “We are protesting for numerous reasons. The Excise Minister must resign, and a thorough investigation must ensue,” he demanded.
He accused the Chief Minister and the Congress government of treating the Governor as if he were a bonded laborer. Drawing parallels to the Congress era under Indira Gandhi, he highlighted how Governors were misused during that time.
Moreover, he criticized the government for disrespecting the Governor during the joint session of the Legislature and subsequently justifying their behavior. “Now they are talking about conducting a padayatra and laying siege to Raj Bhavan, completely disregarding any sense of dignity. What moral authority do they possess to do this?” he questioned.
Among the attendees were BJP state president and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly R. Ashoka, Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Council Chalavadi Narayanaswamy, JD(S) Legislature Party leader Suresh Babu, Legislative Council member S.L. Bhojegowda, and various MLAs and MLCs of the BJP and JD(S).
