Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Feb 4 (NationPress) BJP state President and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra criticized the Siddaramaiah government on Wednesday, alleging that the state's excise policy has led to the proliferation of liquor shops every 500 metres throughout Karnataka.
During a media interaction, Vijayendra remarked, "The BJP and JD(S) maintain that the Chief Minister of this corrupt Congress-led government must make a decisive move regarding the excise situation."
He insisted that the resignation of the Excise Minister should be the first step before initiating any corruption investigations.
Vijayendra further stated that substantial corruption has infiltrated the Excise Department as well. He pointed out that while the state government has struggled to generate funds for its guarantees, it has concurrently raised targets in the Excise Department, transforming Karnataka into a hub for alcohol consumption.
He accused the government of issuing liquor licenses indiscriminately.
According to Vijayendra, the state's policy has resulted in liquor outlets being located almost every 500 metres. Corruption is evident across various departments. He noted that even the head of the Excise Department has publicly disclosed a Rs 6,000 crore scam within the department.
He also mentioned an audio recording that allegedly implicates Excise Minister R.B. Thimmapur, his son, and the Chief Minister. He reminded the Chief Minister of a prior incident when Minister George resigned following the suicide of Deputy SP M. Ganapathi.
Vijayendra highlighted the Valmiki Development Corporation scam, which occurred after the current government assumed power, resulting in an officer's suicide. He stated that Minister B. Nagendra had to resign under dire circumstances.
The state BJP leader indicated that the arrogance displayed by ministers, including the Chief Minister, during the Assembly session on Tuesday exemplified that this corruption extends beyond just ministers.
"Karnataka has essentially become an ATM for the Congress high command. There are efforts to prevent the Excise Minister from resigning, as it may expose deeper issues, hence the Congress government is shielding him," he alleged.
Vijayendra announced that the BJP and JD(S) conducted an overnight protest on Tuesday, pledging to continue their agitation.
In response to opposition claims regarding the alleged Rs 6,000 crore excise scam and their continuous protests demanding his resignation, Karnataka Excise Minister R.B. Thimmapur asserted that he would not resign under any circumstances.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal (Secular) persisted with their ongoing protests at the Vidhana Soudha on Wednesday, demanding the resignation of Excise Minister R.B. Thimmapur over the alleged excise scam.
