Bengaluru, Sep 16 (NationPress) Leaders from the Karnataka BJP presented a memorandum to Governor Thawarchand Gehlot on Tuesday, urging the elimination of Christian sub-castes from the proposed caste list.
In a roundtable event organized by the Social Justice Awareness Forum, the Karnataka BJP passed seven significant resolutions opposing the Socio-Economic and Academic Survey, commonly referred to as the caste census.
The delegation, headed by BJP MP Yaduveer Wadiyar along with other influential leaders, met with Governor Gehlot and submitted the memorandum.
The primary resolutions from the meeting included an immediate retraction of sub-caste codes for individuals who have converted. The 47 Christian sub-caste titles linked with Hindu communities—such as Lingayat Christian, Vishwakarma Christian, Devanga Christian, and Kuruba Christian—should be removed promptly.
Moreover, it was agreed that the inclusion of these 47 Christian sub-caste titles could jeopardize the existing reservation structure. The meeting emphasized that this action is unconstitutional and that the government-backed survey may promote religious conversions.
The delegation called for the government to refrain from conducting the caste census hastily, proposing instead that it be held during the summer.
Additionally, they demanded that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah make it clear that individuals who convert to Christianity will not qualify for reservation benefits.
After the meeting with the Governor, Wadiyar told the media, "Including numerous castes under Christians in the Social, Economic, and Educational Survey is inappropriate. This will create confusion."
Wadiyar noted that 46 castes, such as Vokkaliga Christian and Brahmin Christian, were categorized under Christians. He argued that this classification is unnecessary and could encourage religious conversions.
He also mentioned that the Governor assured them that the issue would be reviewed and appropriate measures would be taken.
Wadiyar stated that if the government fails to act on the removal of invalid castes during the survey, they will be compelled to seek legal action and initiate protests.
The roundtable conference saw attendance from former Chief Ministers B.S. Yediyurappa, Jagadish Shettar, Basavaraj Bommai, Union Minister V. Somanna, and prominent figures such as Prabhakar Kore and Vijay Sankeshwar, alongside key leaders from the Veerashaiva Lingayat community.
