Karnataka Urges Increased LPG Allocation for Hospitality Sector at PM-CMs Meeting
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, March 27 (NationPress) On Friday, Karnataka advocated for a larger allocation of LPG for commercial purposes, especially within the hospitality industry, during the Prime Minister–Chief Ministers' conference. Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized the necessity for coordination akin to that during the Covid-19 pandemic to address the ongoing challenges.
Karnataka’s Food Minister, K.H. Muniyappa, represented the state in the virtual meeting as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was unavailable. He stated that the state petitioned the Centre to enhance LPG allocations for hotels beyond current provisions.
“Currently, approximately 20 percent is allocated for commercial use, with another 20 percent designated for industries, which are prioritized due to their labor-intensive nature. We have requested an increase in the allocation for hotels to 40 percent to significantly benefit the hospitality sector,” Muniyappa articulated.
He further mentioned that the Karnataka government presented multiple demands and recommendations to the Prime Minister, with a strong emphasis on achieving energy self-sufficiency.
Muniyappa highlighted the importance of expanding solar energy production in both flat and mountainous regions to move towards self-reliance. “We proposed that solar energy development be given more significance. The Prime Minister reacted positively,” he noted.
Additionally, discussions included boosting biogas, solar energy, and hydroelectric power production as part of a comprehensive strategy for energy self-sufficiency in the coming years.
A follow-up meeting with relevant stakeholders is scheduled for next Monday to further explore these topics.
Muniyappa spoke to the press following the meeting convened by the Prime Minister with Chief Ministers. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was absent due to prior commitments.
During the session, Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged for closer collaboration between the Centre and states, encouraging a cooperative effort similar to that demonstrated during the Covid-19 pandemic.
“Prime Minister Modi encouraged us to collaborate as we did during the pandemic, with efficient coordination between the Centre and states. Currently, all efforts are directed towards improving conditions, and states must work together,” Muniyappa remarked.
Meanwhile, the Karnataka BJP issued a warning on Friday to the Congress-led government in the state, threatening intense protests should there be an increase in petrol and diesel prices, while acknowledging the Central government's recent price reductions.
Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Modi for the reduction in petrol and diesel prices in honor of Sri Ramanavami.
He recalled that when the GST on ghee was lowered, the Congress government subsequently raised prices.
“If they attempt to increase fuel prices, we will initiate strong protests. The price reductions should not be connected to elections, as elections happen throughout the year in our country. Regardless of positive initiatives, Congress leaders tend to criticize them, and they are doing the same now,” he asserted.
