Colombo, April 26 (NationPress) Indian captain Harmanpreet Kaur expressed her enthusiasm regarding how the young left-arm spinner N Shree Charani will perform in the upcoming ODI tri-series, where the team will compete against the host nation Sri Lanka in the opening match at the R Premadasa Stadium this Sunday.

Originating from the YSR Kadapa district in Andhra Pradesh, Charani drew attention by securing four wickets over two matches for Delhi Capitals (DC) in WPL 2025, showcasing her skill in regulating run flow and outmaneuvering batters during the middle overs. She subsequently took nine wickets in three matches of the Senior Women’s Multi-Day Challenger Trophy in Dehradun, leading to her first call-up to the Indian squad.

“Charani is a player who truly impressed in the WPL, and we have been anticipating the emergence of a left-arm spinner who can significantly contribute to the team. I'm personally very eager to see how she performs in this tournament,” stated Harmanpreet during a pre-series press briefing on Saturday.

The tri-series, which includes South Africa as the third participant, initiates a critical phase for India as they finalize their squad for the upcoming home ODI World Cup later this year. “This series is vital for our preparations for the World Cup, and it presents a fantastic opportunity to compete against top teams globally and gain valuable experience.”

“I believe this tournament will enhance our confidence as we prepare for the home conditions. It’s an excellent initiative to simulate the World Cup atmosphere before the actual event, where we will face various teams while monitoring our run rate and points—these factors are crucial during the World Cup,” added Harmanpreet.

“This experience will undoubtedly benefit the team, and I’m thrilled that we have this chance, especially in Sri Lanka, as we will encounter a similar environment during the ODI World Cup in India,” she elaborated.

Harmanpreet also expressed confidence in her team’s seasoned players to guide India through the challenges in Colombo. “The last time we played here was for the Asia Cup in T20 format, and now we are in ODI format. Our team has considerable experience, having played together for a long time, which will be beneficial.”

“I know these conditions closely resemble Indian ones, especially regarding the heat and how the ball may turn on the surface. We are accustomed to these environments when playing at home, and I believe that our experience will enable us to perform well against both teams.”

With the tri-series facing potential bad weather, and humidity levels already high, Harmanpreet emphasized the importance of hydration, provided rain does not disrupt their day matches. “As we know, the heat will play a significant role; staying hydrated is crucial. For the past few months, we have only been playing night matches, and now we will be returning to day games. It’s essential to keep ourselves refreshed and hydrated, as skill will remain consistent,” she concluded.
