Los Angeles, Oct 13 (NationPress) Hollywood actress Keira Knightley has shared that inquiries about a sequel to the 2002 film “Bend It Like Beckham”, directed by Gurinder Chadha, continue to come her way.
The 40-year-old star revealed that fans frequently approach her regarding the highly praised film, which originally debuted nearly 25 years ago. "It's incredible that a movie from so long ago is still what people want to talk about when they see me," she explained to people.com.
“It’s particularly inspiring to see so many girls engaged in soccer now, and they often want to share their thoughts about it. Being part of something with such a lasting impact and positive influence is remarkable,” Knightley added.
Regarding the sequel, which was announced by Chadha earlier this year, Knightley expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “I caught the news on television. How exciting!”
When asked if she would reprise her role as Jules, she responded, “Seeing it on TV made me think, ‘Oh, how delightful! What will that be?’”
“Bend It Like Beckham” featured Knightley as Jules and Parminder Nagra as Jess, two women united by their love for soccer who form a close friendship on a team.
This uplifting film is a tribute to the sport, showcasing Jules's romantic interests in a coach while Jess navigates playing against her family's wishes.
During the announcement of the sequel, Chadha expressed her eagerness to reconnect with the original characters and further develop the beloved narrative that has contributed to the women’s game.
While Knightley, Nagra, and other original cast members are aware of the sequel's development, they are keen to review the script before officially confirming their involvement. Chadha mentioned, “I’m quite confident that everyone will be eager to return.”
“The entire project hinges on the script and if the original cast is pleased with it,” she noted. “I’m making a concerted effort to ensure that every character I revive has a significant story arc and engaging scenes.”
In her recent role in Netflix’s The Woman in Cabin 10, an adaptation of Ruth Ware's novel, Knightley portrays Laura “Lo” Blacklock, a journalist who potentially witnesses a murder during a luxury cruise.
“Amidst a luxury yacht travel assignment, a journalist sees a passenger thrown overboard late at night, only to be told that it didn’t happen, as all passengers and crew are accounted for. Despite no one believing her, she continues her quest for the truth, risking her own safety,” reads the official synopsis.
