Los Angeles, June 13 (NationPress) Hollywood actress Keira Knightley reflected on a confusing period in her career when she received an Oscar nomination for one film while simultaneously facing criticism as a "terrible actress" for another.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Knightley looked back on her 2006 Oscar nomination for her role in Pride & Prejudice. At the same time, she was being panned for her performance in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest.
"Yes, it was pretty significant for my career. When people approach me, it’s usually about that role," she stated, referring to her portrayal of the heroine from Jane Austen's work.
The actress, who gained fame playing a tomboy footballer in Bend It Like Beckham in 2002, added: "Though Pirates of the Caribbean had already been released, I think the public perception was that I was seen as a poor actress."
Amidst the negative reviews for her role in the second installment of the Pirates franchise, Knightley noted a sudden shift in public opinion regarding her acting skills, as reported by people.com.
"I experienced this tremendous success with Pirates. It was the first major success that was also critically acclaimed. I recall that it was released around the same time as Pirates 2. I received the worst reviews ever for that, all while being nominated for an Oscar—it was quite bewildering for my 21-year-old mind," she shared.
At the age of 20, Knightley was nominated for the Best Actress Academy Award, making her the third youngest nominee at that time, according to variety.com.
Pride & Prejudice, directed by Joe Wright, was re-released in theaters in April to commemorate the film's 20th anniversary. Throughout her career, Knightley has garnered two Academy Award nominations, two British Academy Film Awards, four Golden Globe nominations, and a Laurence Olivier Award.
