Kochi, Feb 6 (NationPress) The special bench of Justices A. K. Jayasankaran Nambiar and C. S. Sudha from the Kerala High Court stated on Thursday that, to adhere to the Hema Committee Report, it would be wise to appoint a Chairperson for the Film Policy Drafting & Cinema Conclave Committee who commands the trust of women.
Justice Nambiar remarked, "When convening a conclave, particularly to tackle issues highlighted by the Hema Committee recommendations, it is crucial to form a committee that inspires confidence in the female populace. Therefore, ensure the selected Chairperson is someone who can instill such trust."
The Hema Committee report unveiled distressing realities of the Malayalam film industry, particularly regarding the sexual exploitation faced by women.
Released in August 2024, the report has seen various actors, including two-time CPI-M legislator Mukesh, Siddique, Edavela Babu, Jayasurya, Ranjith, Maniyanpillai Raju, and Nivin Pauly, secure bail after being implicated in FIRs.
In response to the turmoil generated by the Hema Committee report, the Pinarayi Vijayan government chose to hold a conclave for the film industry to devise a future strategy. However, the inclusion of a controversial figure in the committee faced criticism.
This concern was raised during the hearing, but the state's counsel argued that the committee or Chairperson's role would not involve policy-making; instead, they would gather information to be presented to the government for policy formulation.
The special bench suggested that it would be preferable for the committee to be led by a person who commands confidence among women.
In response, the state indicated that all input from various organizations would be compiled for the Conclave.
The special bench requested the state to provide details on the proposed actions for the conclave before the next hearing, which is scheduled for the first week of March.
