Thiruvananthapuram/Nagpur, Dec 31 (NationPress) A court in Maharashtra has recently granted conditional bail to Father Sudheer, a Malayali priest from the CSI South Kerala Diocese, alongside seven others who were detained in Nagpur under accusations of forced religious conversion.
The group, which included Father Sudheer's wife, Jasmine, faced arrest after complaints from Bajrang Dal activists during a Christmas prayer gathering in Shinkori village, located in the Amravati district.
The arrests led to heightened tensions, with reports indicating that Father Sudheer and his wife had previously encountered threats from Bajrang Dal members.
Activists conducted a protest outside the Banod police station, insisting on legal action against the priests. Consequently, police registered a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita Section 299, alleging charges of hurting religious sentiments.
Jasmine clarified that no conversions were attempted and that the group had merely attended a friend's birthday celebration and Christmas prayers when the event transpired.
Following the arrests, V.D. Satheesan, the Leader of the Opposition in Kerala, sent a letter to Maharashtra's Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, expressing strong disapproval and calling for immediate intervention.
In his correspondence, Satheesan emphasized that Father Sudheer, originally from Amaravila in Thiruvananthapuram, has served in Maharashtra for five years and underlined that detaining individuals for a peaceful prayer meeting infringes upon fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution, particularly regarding the freedom to practice religion.
He urged the authorities to facilitate the release of all individuals arrested and to prevent the recurrence of such incidents.
Father Sudheer and his wife, along with the others detained, were subsequently granted bail by the local court.
The leadership of the CSI Church has conveyed serious concern regarding ongoing attacks against Christians, dispatching a delegation to Nagpur for legal support.
Additionally, church authorities announced plans for protests in response to the actions of the Bajrang Dal activists.
While Father Sudheer and his team have been working in Amravati for five years, the ongoing case presents a challenging scenario, though the court's intervention is regarded as a relief.
