Agartala, July 11 (NationPress) On Friday, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha assigned three key departments, including Higher Education, to newly appointed minister Kishor Barman, who officially took his oath as a cabinet minister on July 3.
Tripura's Chief Secretary Jitendra Kumar Sinha announced in a notification that the state's Governor allocated the three departments to Barman upon the Chief Minister's recommendation, effective immediately. As per the notification, Barman has been entrusted with the Panchayat, Higher Education, and General Administration (political) departments, which were previously under the Chief Minister's purview.
Barman, who served as the state General Secretary of the ruling BJP, expressed his gratitude towards the Chief Minister for the opportunity to oversee these significant departments. He stated, “I am thrilled to have the chance to contribute to the advancement of education and community welfare, particularly for those living in the Gram Panchayats. My passion has always been working closely with the people for their betterment,” he shared with IANS.
At 45, Barman is a first-time MLA representing the ruling BJP. He previously worked with the BJP organization in North Bengal, having relocated to Tripura in 2018. Barman emerged victorious in the 2023 Assembly elections from the Nalchar Assembly constituency in Sepahijala district. His induction marks the second expansion of Chief Minister Saha's cabinet following the establishment of the second BJP government in March 2023.
On March 7 last year, two Tipra Motha Party (TMP) MLAs, Animesh Debbarma and Brishaketu Debbarma, were added to the ministry. The BJP, in coalition with the Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT), led by Saha, secured a second consecutive term on March 8, 2023. The TMP, under the leadership of former royal scion Pradyot Bikram Manikya Debbarma, contested the 2023 Assembly polls independently but later joined the BJP-IPFT coalition government following a tripartite agreement with the Centre and the Tripura government, adding a new dynamic to the political landscape of Tripura.
Currently, the IPFT has one minister, Sukla Charan Noatia, within the cabinet. The BJP-IPFT alliance retained control in Tripura by winning 33 out of 60 Assembly seats, with the BJP claiming 32 seats while the IPFT secured one seat in the 2023 elections.
The TMP, participating in the Assembly elections for the first time, claimed victory in 13 out of the 42 seats contested, establishing itself as the second-largest party after the BJP. Both the TMP and IPFT are tribal-focused parties. The CPI (M) won 11 seats in the recent elections, while the Congress managed three, having previously arranged a seat-sharing agreement between the Left parties and the Congress.
