Mumbai, July 14 (NationPress) The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly experienced a tumultuous session on Monday due to an assault on Sambhaji Brigade founder Praveen Gaikwad by a group of individuals in Akkalkot, located in Solapur district. Their motivation stemmed from perceived disrespect towards the Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Sambhaji Brigade.
Those perpetrating the attack asserted that the organization's name, Sambhaji Brigade, without the inclusion of Chhatrapati, constituted an insult to the legendary warrior, which they deemed unacceptable.
Gaikwad has vocally condemned this assault, labeling it a cowardly act and suggesting it serves as an attempt to silence him, given his advocacy for the progressive ideals of Chhatrapati Shivaji, Mahatma Phule, Rajarshi Shahu, and B.R. Ambedkar.
The matter was brought to attention by Congress Legislature Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar, who recounted that Gaikwad was severely beaten, forcibly removed from his vehicle, and had his face blackened. He characterized the incident as a lethal assault on Gaikwad.
“Gaikwad was ruthlessly attacked by a political party member with a criminal past, already facing charges for possession of a firearm and previous incarceration for homicide. There must be stringent action against this individual,” declared Wadettiwar.
He raised concerns, asking, “Were there any intelligence alerts regarding the attack on Gaikwad? Why was there a lack of police protection at the event?”
Wadettiwar emphasized that Gaikwad is operating without fear, and this despicable attack was directed at him. He insisted on taking severe measures against the assailants.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis stepped in to notify the Assembly that the police had already apprehended the suspects and assured that necessary actions would follow.
“I personally gathered comprehensive details about this incident. The attackers questioned why the organization is simply named Sambhaji and not Chhatrapati Sambhaji. They instigated an argument and then assaulted him. The police responded swiftly, urging Gaikwad to file a complaint, which he initially resisted, but they proceeded to register it. The suspects were arrested immediately and remain in custody. Legal action will be enforced according to applicable laws,” stated Fadnavis.
In a statement to reporters, Gaikwad claimed a deliberate attempt was made on his life, asserting that the Chief Minister and Home Minister Devendra Fadnavis bear moral responsibility.
“The attacker is affiliated with the BJP. I fear no repercussions will follow for him. The legal charges that should have been filed against him have not been applied. I continue to face threats, yet I will not seek police protection. I trust in the Bahujan Samaj and Sambhaji Brigade. Should anything happen to me, I will resign from the organization,” he declared.
“Our vision is rooted in social equality, brotherhood, and humanity. Since 2014, there has been a continuous struggle between the principles of Manusmriti and caste domination against progressive ideologies,” asserted Gaikwad.
