Kolkata, June 12 (NationPress) Chaos erupted in the West Bengal Assembly on Thursday when Speaker Biman Bandyopadhyay declined to accept two adjournment motions proposed by the opposition BJP. These motions aimed to discuss the communal violence that occurred in Murshidabad in April and the disturbances in the Maheshtala area of South 24 Parganas district.
As the BJP's legislative members presented their motions shortly after the session started, the Speaker rejected them, citing that both issues were sub judice and thus could not be addressed.
The decision infuriated the BJP legislators, who, led by Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, began to protest in front of the Speaker’s chair after gathering in the well of the Assembly.
Security personnel formed a human barrier between the Speaker's chair and the protesting legislators.
BJP members shouted slogans and waved flags while protesting by tearing paper documents related to the House proceedings that had been distributed amongst legislators.
Amidst this, West Bengal Minister of State for Finance (independent charge), Chandrima Bhattacharya, voiced her opposition to the destruction of the documents, stating, “These paper documents are not any personal property that they can be destroyed in such a manner.”
Despite the ongoing protests from BJP members, Trinamool Congress MLAs continued their scheduled speeches in the House.
Adhikari is set to meet Governor C.V. Ananda Bose regarding the issue of Maheshtala violence.
The BJP leader has requested the Governor’s intervention for disciplinary actions against the inspector-in-charge of the local Rabindra Nagar police station for allegedly failing to prevent the clashes.
Earlier, he approached the Calcutta High Court, seeking a National Investigation Agency (NIA) inquiry into the Maheshtala clashes, along with the deployment of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) in the area affected by disturbances on Wednesday.
