Mumbai, Aug 5 (NationPress) The Privileges Committee of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly is scheduled to convene on August 6 to examine the circumstances surrounding a brawl that erupted between the supporters of lawmakers Jitendra Awhad and Gopichand Padalkar. This incident took place within the confines of Vidhan Bhavan during the monsoon session of the state legislature in July.
Sources indicate that the Privileges Committee will review the situation after Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar announced on July 18 that the matter would be referred to them.
The confrontation between the supporters of NCP (SP) MLA Awhad and BJP representative Padalkar occurred in the lobby of the legislative building on July 17, following a tense verbal exchange between the two legislators the previous day. Subsequently, one supporter from each side was taken into custody.
Speaker Narwekar also revealed that criminal action has been initiated, with FIRs filed at the Marine Drive police station. While the supporters were arrested, Awhad was reportedly charged with interfering with public officials in the course of their duties.
Furthermore, he announced plans to establish an ethics committee similar to that of Parliament, which will have the authority to disqualify members to uphold the integrity of the legislature.
“In light of this unfortunate incident, I want all members to remember that as representatives in the Bhavan, we are tasked with upholding the highest standards of our state legislature, often referred to as the temple of democracy. Such incidents must not recur, and legislators should exercise due diligence,” stated Speaker Narwekar.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has also denounced the incident.
“The Speaker and the Chairman need to take this matter seriously. I have urged them to implement strict measures. This is not reflective of the legislature's culture,” he remarked.
Leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), Uddhav Thackeray, also called for decisive action against those responsible.
“They are not political activists, but thugs. Is this the level we have sunk to?” questioned Thackeray.
