Kolkata, May 2 (NationPress) Following a tragic hotel fire on Madan Mohan Burman Street in central Kolkata on Tuesday night, which resulted in the loss of 15 lives, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has mandated the immediate shutdown of all rooftop dining establishments in the city. This includes restaurants, bars, and bar-cum-restaurants.
On Friday, Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim elaborated on the rationale behind this directive.
“The roof of any building is a communal area. Similar to ground floors, roofs cannot be commercially exploited,” Hakim clarified.
A notification for the prompt cessation of rooftop dining operations has already been issued.
“We must ensure that in the event of a fire, individuals trapped inside a building can find refuge on the roof. Not all matters fall under KMC’s jurisdiction. However, wherever we can intervene, we will take appropriate action,” the Mayor stated.
He emphasized that roofs serve as a critical refuge for those caught in a blaze when emergency exits are either nonexistent or malfunctioning. “We aim to preserve that final shelter option, thus the order for the immediate closure of rooftop establishments,” Hakim noted.
Furthermore, a borough-wise survey will be conducted to ascertain the exact number of rooftop eateries operating within the Kolkata Municipal Corporation's jurisdiction.
Preliminary investigations have uncovered security deficiencies at the hotel where the fire erupted. In addition, there were significant failures in fire safety management and emergency evacuation protocols, leading to most casualties being attributed to smoke inhalation rather than burns.
Local residents have voiced concerns over past complaints regarding illegal construction of the hotel, claiming that neither the Kolkata Municipal Corporation nor local law enforcement acted on them, which may have prevented this unfortunate incident.
