Did Kuno National Park Just Welcome Three New Cheetah Cubs?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhopal, Feb 18 (NationPress) The cheetah population at Kuno National Park (KNP) in Madhya Pradesh's Sheopur district has seen a significant increase, as South African female cheetah Gamini welcomed three adorable cubs on Wednesday.
This latest birth represents the ninth successful cheetah birth on Indian soil since the inception of Project Cheetah on September 17, 2022. With these new additions, India's cheetah population has now reached 38, including 27 cubs born in the country.
Madhya Pradesh's Chief Minister Mohan Yadav and Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav shared this exciting news on social media, promoting the state as a “vital hub for cheetah reintroduction.”
“It brings great joy that Gamini, a female cheetah brought from South Africa under Project Cheetah, has successfully given birth to three cubs. This achievement marks the ninth successful birth since the cheetahs were introduced to Kuno National Park,” he posted on X.
The Chief Minister heralded this milestone as historic, stating it bolsters India's commitment to wildlife conservation, biodiversity protection, and maintaining ecological balance.
Union Minister Bhupender Yadav described the birth of these cheetahs as a powerful symbol of India's unwavering conservation efforts.
“This is a proud moment for Kuno and India—may Gamini and her three little sprinters flourish and advance the nation’s cheetah revival story with speed and grace,” he added on X.
He emphasized that each successful birth strengthens the foundation of Project Cheetah and showcases the dedication of the field staff and veterinary teams at KNP.
Gamini was translocated from South Africa as part of the ambitious reintroduction program aimed at restoring the population of the world's fastest land animal in India. Earlier this month, another cheetah named Aasha, imported from Namibia, gave birth to five cubs at Kuno Park.
This latest development comes just weeks before a third batch of eight cheetahs from Botswana is set to arrive in Madhya Pradesh on February 28, further enhancing the country's cheetah conservation initiative.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had dedicated Project Cheetah to the nation a few years ago. This initiative continues to attract global attention as a bold experiment in ecological restoration. With each new birth, Kuno National Park strengthens its position as a beacon of hope for the world's fastest land animal, combining scientific rigor with national pride to revive a lost legacy of India's wilderness.
