Lausanne, April 10 (NationPress) Cricket will feature at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games in a T20 format, with six teams set to compete in both the men’s and women’s tournaments, according to the Organisers.
The Executive Board (EB) of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved the event programme and athlete quotas for LA 2028 on Wednesday.
A total of 90 athlete quotas have been designated for each gender, enabling every team to select a 15-member squad.
The venues for cricket in LA28 are still to be confirmed.
Cricket is among five new sports confirmed for the upcoming Olympics. The IOC sanctioned cricket’s inclusion for LA28 two years back, alongside baseball/softball, flag football, lacrosse (sixes), and squash.
The addition of cricket to the LA28 sports programme was announced during the 141st IOC Session in Mumbai, along with Flag Football, Lacrosse, Squash, and Baseball/Softball. It is already featured in other multi-sport events, including the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.
Both men’s and women’s cricket tournaments, played in T20 format, were included in the Asian Games in 2010, 2014, and 2023.
At the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, eight teams participated, while the Hangzhou Asian Games saw 14 teams in the men’s event and nine in the women’s.
The LA28 sports programme now includes 31 sports following the IOC’s approval of boxing in March 2025, with five additional sports proposed by the Organising Committee and accepted by the IOC in 2023.
With a total of 351 medal events, which is 22 more than Paris 2024 (329), the LA28 programme maintains a core athlete quota of 10,500, including an extra 698 quota places for the five newly proposed sports (baseball/softball, cricket, flag football, lacrosse, and squash).
In the initial sports programme, there will be 10,500 athletes, comprising 5,333 female and 5,167 male athletes. The additional sports contribute 322 female and 376 male athletes. Moreover, six mixed events have been added to the programme, resulting in 351 events total: 161 women’s, 165 men’s, and 25 mixed events.
