New Delhi, April 16 (NationPress) The Indian Golf Union (IGU) has expressed enthusiasm regarding the addition of the Mixed Team Golf Event in the upcoming Los Angeles Olympic Games by the International Olympic Committee. "At the Los Angeles Olympics, we might witness Shubhankar Sharma and Aditi Ashok teaming up for India!" the IGU shared in a social media post on Wednesday.
"The Indian Golf Union is pleased with the inclusion of the Mixed Team Golf Event in the #LA2028 Olympics by @iocmedia," it stated.
During the Paris Olympic Games in 2024, golf was played as an individual sport for both men and women. However, the IOC has now approved the addition of mixed team golf to promote gender equality and introduce a fresh format to attract more spectators.
The International Golf Federation (IGF) confirmed on Tuesday that the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has sanctioned the introduction of an Olympic Golf Mixed-Team Event, which will make its debut at the Los Angeles 2028 (LA28) Games, complementing the Men’s Individual Olympic Golf Competition and the Women’s Individual Olympic Golf Competition. All three golf events will take place at The Riviera Country Club during the LA28 Games.
The event program and athlete quotas for LA28 received approval from the IOC Executive Board on April 9. With a total of 351 medal events—22 more than at Paris 2024 (329)—the LA28 program upholds the core athlete quota of 10,500, plus an additional 698 spots allocated for the five sports proposed by the LA28 Organising Committee, including Baseball/Softball, Cricket, Flag Football, Lacrosse, and Squash.
The LA28 event program was formulated based on requests from the International Sports Federations to the IOC.
This decision from the IOC Executive Board came after a recommendation from the Olympic Programme Commission and adhered to principles approved in 2023, which emphasize gender equality, global appeal, cost-efficiency, and athlete focus. With the addition of boxing, which was approved by the IOC Session in March 2025, the LA28 sports program will consist of 31 sports, with an additional five sports proposed by the Organising Committee and sanctioned by the IOC in 2023.
Golf is among six sports—alongside Archery, Athletics (4x100m mixed relay), Gymnastics, Rowing Coastal Beach Sprint, and Table Tennis—that will incorporate a mixed-gender competition for LA28.
