New Delhi, Jan 19 (NationPress) Bengal Tigers forward Lalremsiami reflected on the team’s second-place achievement in the Women’s Hockey India League (HIL) 2025-26, viewing the season as a significant learning experience for both herself and the squad. She expressed optimism about their potential to enhance their performance and secure a higher rank next year.
“This season was remarkable for us, and I learned a lot. Naturally, our goal was to clinch the title and emerge as champions, but as a team, we delivered commendable performances. Sometimes, the outcome is beyond our control, but overall, I thoroughly enjoyed HIL this time. We had fun and grew together,” Lalremsiami stated.
The Tigers faced numerous intense matches that culminated in penalty shootouts, including the finals against the SG Pipers. Reflecting on those critical moments, the Indian veteran emphasized the importance of trusting their abilities rather than overthinking the results.
“In our prior encounters with the Pipers, one match went to a shootout after we conceded late, while in another, we dominated but failed to score. We felt those matches were rightfully ours to win, and we let them slip away rather than being outperformed. Leading up to the final, our focus was clear – play our game, concentrate on our skills, and aim to conclude the match in regular time. Unfortunately, that didn’t occur, but the experience was invaluable for all of us.”
After a slow initiation into the tournament, the Bengal Tigers gained consistency and momentum as the league advanced. Lalremsiami credited this progress to the team’s environment, effective communication, and leadership, which facilitated robust on-field synergy in a short period.
“We didn’t have extensive time to establish combinations, yet everyone – players and coaches – dedicated themselves to understanding one another swiftly. Our team culture and communication were excellent, contributing immensely on the field. Senior players managed the team well and guided the younger members. Each individual played their role, and that consistency was vital for us.”
Looking ahead, the 25-year-old clearly outlined the team’s ambitions. “Previously, we finished third; this time, we secured second. Next season, we will undoubtedly aim for the trophy,” she affirmed.
Lalremsiami had a stellar individual season, scoring three goals and ranking among the top five scorers in the tournament, having played the entire campaign as a striker.
“In the last season, I was positioned more as a midfielder, but this time, I played the entire tournament as a striker. This role presented me with greater scoring opportunities. The midfielders and defenders provided tremendous support, for which I am genuinely thankful. I relished this season and am pleased with my performance.”
She highlighted that the league significantly sharpened her decision-making skills within the circle.
“As a striker, you must make rapid decisions in 1v1 situations and under pressure in the circle. During HIL, I encountered many such scenarios. Initially, I made some poor decisions, but as the matches progressed, I learned how to improve. Particularly in the circle, my decision-making has greatly enhanced.”
Lalremsiami underscored the importance of camaraderie and leadership within the strong Indian core of the Tigers squad.
“Players like Vandana, Monika, and Gurjeet are our seniors, and while we play together for India, we hadn’t been on the same field for a while. Coming together in HIL was exhilarating and enjoyable. As Indian players, we recognize our duty to mentor the juniors, maintain communication under pressure, and enable everyone to play naturally. I believe we succeeded in that.”
The forward also stressed how leagues like the Women’s HIL elevate the confidence of Indian players. “HIL is a grand platform. Young athletes aspire to play here alongside international players. Initially, confidence may be low, but it significantly grows over time. For both junior and senior players, this league is crucial for development.”
With a demanding international schedule on the horizon, including the Women’s 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup Qualifiers in Hyderabad in March 2026, the Asian Games, and other major tournaments, Lalremsiami is confident that her HIL experience will prove essential.
“We will encounter many high-pressure matches where shootouts could determine results. In HIL, we faced numerous such situations, offering considerable mental preparation. Even in instances of failure, valuable lessons are learned. I aspire to keep improving, score more goals, and bolster my confidence in my abilities. This experience will undoubtedly aid me in the upcoming World Cup qualifiers and future competitions.”
