Are Lalu and Rabri Innocent? They Choose to Stand Trial in Land-for-Jobs Case
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
In New Delhi on February 16 (NationPress), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Lalu Prasad Yadav and former Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi proclaimed their innocence in the purported Railways land-for-jobs corruption scandal currently being investigated by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). They conveyed their readiness to confront the trial.
During their appearance before the Special CBI Court at Rouse Avenue, the duo denied allegations of corruption, cheating, and criminal conspiracy, choosing to contest the case based on its merits.
On January 29, the trial court had permitted RJD leaders, including Lalu Prasad Yadav, Rabri Devi, Tejashwi Yadav, and Tej Pratap Yadav, to appear for formal charge framing in the land-for-jobs case from February 1 to February 25.
The court instructed the accused to notify their presence at least a day in advance and set March 9 as the trial's start date.
Earlier this January, Special Judge Vishal Gogne of the Rouse Avenue Court framed charges against Lalu Prasad Yadav and his family, noting their operation as a criminal enterprise within a larger conspiracy that allegedly exploited public employment opportunities in the Indian Railways for personal gain.
The court acknowledged that the CBI's charge sheet prima facie indicated that Lalu Prasad Yadav's close associates helped acquire land in exchange for jobs in the Railways across various regions.
The court dismissed the discharge plea from Lalu Yadav and his family, deeming it entirely unwarranted.
As per the court's order, charges have been framed against 46 of the 98 remaining accused in the case, including Lalu Prasad Yadav and his family, while 52 have been discharged.
It is noteworthy that proceedings against five accused have been halted due to their deaths. The allegations center around claims of massive corruption occurring from 2004 to 2009, a period when Lalu Prasad Yadav served as the Union Railway Minister.
The CBI alleges that parcels of land were acquired in the names of family members of Lalu Prasad Yadav and a related company, often at below-market rates and primarily through cash transactions. In exchange, jobs in the Railways were purportedly provided across different zones.
Simultaneously, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is investigating the suspected money laundering linked to land transfers in Patna.
