Madrid, Nov 11 (NationPress) Lamine Yamal has been officially released from Spain’s squad ahead of the forthcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers due to medical reasons, as confirmed by the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) on Tuesday.
The 18-year-old winger from Barcelona, who has missed the last five matches for his club due to injury, underwent a radiofrequency procedure on Monday.
The RFEF stated, "This treatment was conducted without prior notification to the national team's medical personnel, who only became aware of it through a report received at 10:40 p.m. the previous evening, which recommended a rest period of 7-10 days."
In light of these circumstances, and placing the player's health and well-being as a top priority, the Royal Spanish Football Federation decided to withdraw Yamal from the current squad.
Initially, Yamal was set to join the Spain squad on Monday as they prepared for the upcoming qualifiers. However, the Barcelona star continues to grapple with a groin injury that has kept him out of action recently, missing Spain's previous qualifying matches in October.
Spain currently tops Group E with an impeccable record - four victories from four matches, netting 15 goals and conceding none. Securing positive results in the upcoming matches will guarantee their spot in the 2026 World Cup, to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Luis de la Fuente’s team will first travel to Tbilisi to face Georgia on Saturday, followed by a home match against Turkey in Seville on November 18.
Despite the recent injury hurdle, Yamal has been in remarkable form for Barcelona this season, scoring six goals and providing six assists in 11 appearances across all competitions. The young talent has already made 23 appearances for Spain, establishing himself as a vital player for both club and country.
