Jammu, April 20 (NationPress) Authorities confirmed that at least three individuals lost their lives due to a severe hailstorm and several landslides in Ramban, Jammu and Kashmir. Relief efforts are being prioritized for those affected.

Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Minister of State (PMO), remarked on X, “Throughout the night, the Ramban area experienced a heavy hailstorm, multiple landslides, and strong winds, affecting the regions surrounding Ramban town. The National Highway is currently obstructed, and sadly, there have been three fatalities along with property damage for several families. I remain in close contact with Deputy Commissioner Mr. Baseer-ul-Haq Chaudhary.

He commended the district administration for their prompt response, which has been crucial in saving many lives.

“All necessary relief, including financial assistance, is being extended. The DC has been informed that, if necessary, any additional resources can be provided from the MP's personal assets as well. There is no need to panic; together we will overcome this natural disaster,” he stated.

Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also expressed his sorrow on X regarding the disaster's toll. He stated, “I am deeply saddened by the devastating landslide and flash flood in Ramban, which have inflicted significant harm on lives and property. We are coordinating with local authorities to ensure immediate rescue operations as required.”

He added that he would assess the situation later in the day. “I will evaluate the plans for restoration, relief, and repairs. Our immediate focus is on managing the current situation. Citizens are advised to heed travel advisories and refrain from unnecessary travel in vulnerable areas,” he mentioned.

Over the past three days, torrential rains, hailstorms, and landslides have affected the union territory. Lightning has struck various locations across the Valley and Jammu division.

Reports indicate damage to both public and private properties in numerous areas as authorities deployed relief and rescue teams to assist impacted families.

The Meteorological (MeT) department reported, “On April 20: Expect partly to generally cloudy conditions with light to moderate rainfall (light snow in higher altitudes) at most locations, accompanied by thunderstorms/hailstorms and gusty winds into the afternoon and late evening. April 21: Generally cloudy with possible light rain/thunder in scattered areas. April 22-28: Generally dry with cloudiness expected towards the evening of April 25.”

The department advised the public to plan accordingly and adhere to administration/traffic advisories. Farmers have been urged to halt farming operations until April 21, according to their advisory.

“There is a risk of landslides/mudslides/shooting stones in vulnerable areas. It is recommended to stay indoors or in safe locations during thunderstorms/lightning/gusty winds,” the MeT department advised.
