Bhubaneswar, Oct 31 (NationPress) The District and Sessions Judge Court in Dhenkanal has sentenced eight individuals to life imprisonment due to their involvement in the murder of a man stemming from political rivalry during the campaigning for the 2017 Gram Panchayat elections in the Tarava locality of the district.
The convicted individuals have been named as Byomakesh Biswal, Trayambaka Biswal, Mrutyunjaya Biswal, Samarendra Biswal, Kulamani Behera, Debendra Swain, Hrudananda Biswal, and Manmohan Biswal.
Reports indicate that the deceased, Salman Rout, a 24-year-old identified as a BJP supporter, was conversing with friends, including complainant Bikram Keshari Mallick, near a local shop at Godi Sahi in the Tarava area on the evening of February 4, 2017.
During this time, the accused, affiliated with a rival political faction, arrived to paste posters on a nearby wall. An argument ensued when Rout and his friends voiced their objections. Although Rout was not initially part of the confrontation, he was attacked while attempting to mediate.
The assailants then opened fire at Rout, striking him in the chest and causing severe gunshot wounds. Both the victim and the complainant were taken to the Dhenkanal district headquarters hospital, where doctors pronounced Rout as 'brought dead'.
This murder ignited widespread unrest in the Tarava area, prompting police to enforce prohibitory measures under Section 144 of the CrPC to avert further violence.
Initially investigated by the Dhenkanal district police, the case was transferred to the Odisha Crime Branch approximately a week post-incident.
According to the Crime Branch, 'The incident was a result of political envy and rivalry between supporters of two opposing parties during the Gram Panchayat elections in February 2017.' The investigation involved the examination of several eyewitnesses, the seizure of two firearms—including the one used in the crime—and the indictment of 15 individuals in this matter.
The court delivered its verdict on October 28, 2025, with the punishment details disclosed on Friday.
