According to reports, on the evening of June 13, 2020, the victim, Lambodar Muni, owner of Mahalaxmi Bhandar, a distributor for Heritage Milk Products, was resting in his godown at his office located in Hilpatna, Berhampur. This is when unknown assailants broke in to carry out a robbery.
The intruders ultimately murdered Muni and fled with Rs 10 lakhs in cash along with gold ornaments weighing between 20 to 25 grams.
The initial investigation was carried out by local police following the registration of a case at Gosaninuagaon Police Station on June 14, 2020. However, after the deceased's son reported shortcomings in the police's handling of the case, it was escalated to the Orissa High Court.
On September 27, 2023, the Odisha High Court directed the Crime Branch of Odisha Police to take over the investigation by registering a new case on December 1, 2023.
Police apprehended five suspects: Rupesh Padhy alias Shiva Mahakud, Ranjit Sahu alias Naka, Srinu Patra, and Sankar Sahu for their involvement in the robbery and murder.
During a leading-to-discovery procedure, police recovered the stolen cash, gold, and other valuables from the accused, which were later confirmed as belonging to Muni by his family.
After reviewing testimonies from 41 witnesses along with other evidence, the court found the accused guilty on January 28, 2026. The sentencing took place on Friday.
The prosecution's case was supported by oral and documentary evidence, including CCTV footage and mobile call records of the accused.
