Agartala, Jan 21 (NationPress) A Tripura court sentenced three youths to life imprisonment on Tuesday for the gruesome murder of a mason that occurred six years ago during an arbitration meeting in a Panchayat office in the Unakoti district, according to officials.

Public Prosecutor Sunirmal Deb stated that the ruling was issued by Sudipta Chowdhury, the judge of the Unakoti District Court.

The violent incident unfolded on April 28, 2019, when Magbat Ali, a resident of Bhagwan Nagar in the Gournagar block, had a long-standing feud with Zamir Ali from Irani village.

To mediate the issue, the Legal Aid division held an arbitration meeting at the Yubarajnagar Panchayat office. Magbat was present with his brother Achab Ali, while Zamir was accompanied by his two brothers — Hossain Ali and Sahin Ali.

During the meeting, it was agreed that Magbat would pay Rs 5,000 to Zamir to resolve the conflict. However, Magbat could only gather Rs 3,000 at that moment and expressed his inability to settle the full amount.

The Legal Aid mediators suggested that both parties step outside the office for further discussion. As they moved to the veranda, Hossain and Sahin restrained Magbat while Zamir Ali fatally slit his throat with a sharp knife.

Magbat collapsed immediately, losing a significant amount of blood. Authorities from the Irani police station responded swiftly and transported him to the Unakoti District Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Later that evening, Achab Ali, Magbat's brother, lodged a complaint against Zamir, Hossain, and Sahin. Investigating Officer Chaitanya Riang apprehended the suspects and submitted a chargesheet to the court on August 31, 2019.

Throughout the trial, 14 witnesses testified against the defendants, while five provided testimony in their defense.

After extensive legal proceedings, the Unakoti District Court declared Zamir Ali, Hossain Ali, and Sahin Ali guilty on Monday.

On Tuesday, the court sentenced all three to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000 each, stipulating that failure to pay the fine would result in an additional three months of imprisonment.
