The ruling was made by the Chinsurah Court in Hooghly district, where the couple was found guilty and the punishment was pronounced.
On June 7, 2019, Mohammad Anwar, a 23-year-old from Notungram in the Magraganj area, was discovered in a pool of blood outside a shop in the Kantapukur locality. He was rescued by police during a routine patrol; however, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at Mogra Rural Hospital.
The following day, Anwar’s maternal uncle, Ranjit Sau, lodged a murder complaint at the local police station, naming Krishna Baul Das and Lakshmi Roy as the perpetrators.
Investigators uncovered an eyewitness who testified having witnessed Anwar engaged in an argument with the couple. This led to their arrest and the initiation of legal proceedings.
Subrata Bhattacharya, the public prosecutor, presented the testimonies of 24 individuals during the trial.
Reportedly, Lakshmi had been waiting for Rs 100 from Anwar when a quarrel erupted over the delayed payment. In a fit of rage, Krishna struck Anwar's head with a brick, resulting in his death. The couple fled the scene but were later captured by authorities.
On Tuesday, Additional District and Sessions Judge Sanjay Kumar Sharma delivered the verdict, imposing a life sentence and a fine of Rs 5,000 on the couple. Additionally, the court mandated a compensation of Rs 2 lakh to be paid to the deceased's mother. Sources revealed that the family expressed satisfaction with the court's decision.
