Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Nov 4 (NationPress) A court has handed down a life sentence to a woman and her daughter for the brutal murder of an elderly relative, Sumita Ghosh, in Madhyamgram city, located in the North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.
The Barasat court ruled on Monday, imposing a fine of one lakh rupees on both Falguni Ghosh and her mother Aarti Ghosh, in addition to their life sentences.
The judge has mandated that they face an additional six months of imprisonment if they do not pay the fine.
Moreover, they have been sentenced to serve seven years for tampering with evidence and fined Rs 50,000 for this offense.
Following the verdict, the public prosecutor emphasized, "A significant point in this case is that they will first serve seven years in prison. Their life sentences will commence thereafter, meaning they will remain incarcerated for the duration of their lives."
Conversely, the defense attorney announced intentions to challenge the ruling in the Calcutta High Court.
In February, the dismembered remains of Sumita were discovered inside a trolley bag at Kumartuli Ghat in Kolkata.
The accused were reportedly attempting to dispose of the bag in the Hooghly River when local residents noticed blood seeping from it.
Upon investigation, locals pried open the bag, revealing the gruesome remains of Sumita Ghosh.
Police inquiries traced the crime back to Madhyamgram, where Sumita, the maternal grandmother, had been staying with her granddaughter, Falguni.
According to law enforcement, the murder stemmed from a property dispute.
The police subsequently apprehended Falguni and Aarti, who had sold Sumita's jewelry, including necklaces and earrings, at a gold shop in Bowbazar for Rs 42,000 shortly after the crime.
Furthermore, they were found to have placed an order for new jewelry valued at Rs 2,53,000, with Rs 50,000 already paid through online transactions from Sumita's mobile phone.
