Bhubaneswar, March 25 (NationPress) A local court in Odisha’s capital, Bhubaneswar, on Tuesday sentenced four members of a family to life imprisonment for the murder of a youth in the Jatni area of the city due to previous enmity in 2017.

The convicts were named as Halu Behera, his son Gopinath Behera, Nalu Behera, and his son Mrunal Behera alias Kanha, all hailing from Shandhapur village under the jurisdiction of Jatni police.

Reports indicate that Kanha had previously made inappropriate remarks towards the sister of the deceased, Anup Behera, which triggered frequent disputes between the two families. Just 10 to 15 days prior to the brutal murder, a physical altercation had occurred.

Subsequently, Kanha's family plotted to kill Anup, who was known to oppose Kanha the most. On September 2, 2017, as Anup was heading to his brother Swarup's beetle shop for the night, he was ambushed by the four convicts and other family members, who assaulted him with sharp weapons. They also attacked Anup's family members when they attempted to help.

Upon notification, police arrived at the scene and transported the injured to the hospital. Anup later succumbed to his injuries while being treated at the Capital Hospital. The following day, September 3, 2017, police apprehended the individuals responsible for the heinous crime after registering a case.

The court delivered its verdict on Tuesday based on witness testimonies and the investigation report.

In a separate but equally important matter, a special POCSO court in Bhubaneswar also sentenced a man to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for the crime of raping a minor girl in the Chandrasekharpur police station area in 2019.

On May 25, 2019, the accused, Bunty Sahoo, a driver, incapacitated the victim with chemicals sprayed on her face before sexually assaulting her at a secluded location near his rented home.

After a complaint was filed by the victim’s father, police arrested the suspect on May 26, 2019, and opened a case. The court reached its verdict on Tuesday after reviewing witness statements and evidence presented during the trial.
