Odisha: Man and Brother-in-Law Arrested for Murdering His Pregnant Wife

Bhubaneswar, Dec 14 (NationPress) The Rourkela Police in Odisha made significant arrests on Friday, taking into custody a husband and his brother-in-law, an Assistant Sub Inspector of Police, for orchestrating the murder of his pregnant wife in Jhirdapali village, located in the Sundargarh district.
The individuals apprehended have been identified as Deben Kumar Behera (35), residing in Jhirdapali village under Tikayatpali police jurisdiction, and Satya Narayan Behera (48), from Gopinathpur village under Ghusura Police Station in Sundargarh district.
Deben Kumar works as a local Panchayat Extension Officer (PEO), while his brother-in-law, ASI Satya Narayan, is assigned to the Uditnagar Court in Sundargarh.
According to statements made to the media by DIG of Police (Western Range) Brijesh Kumar Rai, the victim, Shamyamayee Behera, was reportedly attacked at her home by miscreants attempting to steal her belongings.
During the altercation, Shamyamayee confronted the assailants as they tried to seize her gold chain and Mangalsutra. Tragically, the miscreants fired shots at the pregnant Shamyamayee, who was subsequently taken to the Bonai Sub-Divisional Hospital (BSDH), where she was pronounced dead upon arrival.
DIG Rai also mentioned that following the incident, he and Superintendent of Police Rourkela Nitesh Wadwani promptly visited the crime scene to assess the situation.
A special investigative team was established by the Rourkela SP to gather evidence and clarify the sequence of events, scrutinizing the statements provided by family members and neighbors.
Upon investigation, inconsistencies in the statements, along with contradictory forensic evidence and omissions from the victim’s husband, Deben Kumar, led to the conclusion that the case was a premeditated murder.
“The police investigation determined that Deben Kumar murdered his wife due to his illicit relationship with another woman, which his wife opposed. Therefore, he resorted to killing her to eliminate the obstacle,” stated DIG Rai.
Furthermore, the authorities revealed that Satya Narayan was complicit in hiding the murder weapon and assisted Deben Kumar in evading justice.
Law enforcement has seized a Scorpio vehicle (OD14AC3531), a homemade pistol along with three live rounds of ammunition, and one spent cartridge from the scene.
