Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, April 8 (NationPress) In a significant ruling, the District and Sessions Court in Keonjhar district, Odisha, has condemned three individuals to rigorous life imprisonment related to a murder case from 2022.
The convicted individuals -- Uttam Kumar Mahakud, Upendra Kumar Behera, and Nabakishore Mahakud -- are also mandated to pay a fine of Rs 10,000 each. Should they fail to settle this amount, they will face an additional year of imprisonment as stipulated by the court.
The victim, Mayadhar Behera, aged 48, along with the convicts, hailed from Kadakala village within the jurisdiction of Nayakote police station in Keonjhar. The victim operated a poultry shop at the local market.
According to Public Prosecutor Pradeep Kumar Das, an intense argument erupted between Uttam and the victim at around 8 p.m. on February 26, 2022, which stemmed from prior grievances. Following this confrontation, Uttam returned home, only to return later accompanied by Nabakishore and Upendra.
Further details revealed that Upendra, who owned a chicken shop in the same market, held a longstanding grudge against Mayadhar. Armed with various lethal weapons, the trio brutally assaulted the victim, who suffered severe injuries and ultimately succumbed to excessive bleeding on-site.
After the assailants fled, leaving the victim's body behind, the investigation commenced following a complaint lodged by Mayadhar's elder brother. Police apprehended Uttam and Upendra the next day, while Nabakishore was captured from his hiding spot on March 22, 2022.
Upon reviewing the evidence, including eyewitness accounts, the court found the defendants guilty, leading to the verdict announced on Wednesday. The prosecution was represented by Pradip Kumar Das.
