The individuals apprehended have been identified as Samarendra Behera (20), known as Muna, Sangram Behera (24), referred to as Kuna, and Sangram Kesari Behera (37), also called Satura, as confirmed by the police on Sunday.
The suspects, originally from the Kanpur region of Cuttack district, had been residing in GGP Colony in Bhubaneswar.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Zone V, Biswaranjan Senapati, informed the media that YouTuber Rahul Ranjan Maharana was fatally attacked at a high school field in the GGP Colony area under Mancheswar Police jurisdiction around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Upon receiving the report, law enforcement quickly arrived at the scene and initiated an investigation.
ACP Senapati mentioned that the absence of CCTV cameras at the location led the police to depend on eyewitness accounts.
Thanks to the intelligence gathered, officers were able to trace the registration numbers of two motorcycles utilized by the suspects.
The police tracked down the Army Jawan and his accomplices to their rented residence in GGP Colony, successfully arresting them just hours after the crime.
Senapati further relayed to reporters that both the victim and his friends, as well as the accused, were present at the field that evening.
“Shiba, a friend of Rahul, inadvertently approached the area where the suspects were gathered while he was conversing on the phone. During his chat, he used some slang, which the jawan took exception to, resulting in a heated dispute,” explained ACP.
He added that the confrontation escalated, leading the jawan and his nephews to attack Shiba.
“In the midst of this, Rahul rushed over to help Shiba. Tragically, one of the jawan's nephews assaulted Rahul with a knife, inflicting critical wounds. Rahul later succumbed to those injuries,” Senapati stated.
ACP Senapati clarified that the incident arose from a sudden provocation, dismissing any notion of prior animosity between the accused and the victim.
Additionally, the police seized two motorcycles, three mobile devices, and one knife during the investigation.
