Odisha Vigilance Discovers Crores in Assets from Engineer's Raids
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bhubaneswar, March 26 (NationPress) In a significant operation, the Odisha Vigilance unearthed assets valued in crores, which included Rs 18.90 lakh in cash, during coordinated searches at several locations associated with an Assistant Engineer from the Water Resources Department. This action was prompted by allegations of accumulating wealth that exceeds his known income sources.
The implicated Assistant Engineer, Panchu Behera, is currently serving as the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) at DAHA Irrigation Sub-Division, operating under the Superintending Engineer (SE) of the Bhanjanagar Irrigation Division located in Ganjam district. The searches took place at five different sites within the district, including a three-story residence in Berhampur; his official quarters and office in Bhanjanagar; a relative’s home in Berhampur; and his ancestral property in Polasara.
Five teams from Odisha Vigilance, led by three Deputy Superintendents of Police, seven Inspectors, and additional support staff, executed the operation based on search warrants from the Court of the Special Judge, Vigilance, in Berhampur.
During the searches, officials discovered that Behera and his family held ownership of a multi-storied building, five plots of land across various locations in Berhampur, and cash totaling Rs 18,90,800 (with Rs 15.13 lakh found in the Berhampur residence and Rs 3,72,800 at the government quarters in Bhanjanagar).
Additionally, they seized gold items weighing 568 grams, which included 178 grams in gold coins, alongside bank, postal, and insurance deposits approaching Rs 90 lakh.
Moreover, Behera possessed an Ajax Argo 4300 concrete mixer purchased in 2024 for Rs 57 lakh, a Hyundai excavator bought in 2025 for Rs 37 lakh, one four-wheeler, three two-wheelers, and household possessions valued at around Rs 8.57 lakh.
Vigilance sources suggest that more assets might be uncovered, predicting an overall increase in the total valuation.
Notably, just two days prior, vigilance officials had recovered nearly Rs 29 lakh in cash from the residence and office of another state government official, Ambika Prasad Rath, an Auditor in the Regional Director of Education (RDE) office in Bhubaneswar, during raids following his arrest for allegedly taking a bribe.
