Bhubaneswar, March 27 (NationPress) - An Assistant Engineer from the Water Resources Department in Ganjam district has been apprehended by the Odisha Vigilance for allegedly accumulating assets that exceed his declared income by a staggering 334 percent.
The individual in question, Panchu Behera, serves as the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) at the DAHA Irrigation Sub-Division, which falls under the Bhanjanagar Irrigation Division in Ganjam.
On Friday, he was brought before the Court of the Special Judge for Vigilance in Berhampur, where he was subsequently placed in judicial custody.
Following allegations of financial misconduct, vigilance officials conducted simultaneous raids at five different locations associated with Behera on Thursday, uncovering assets valued in crores. These included Rs 18.90 lakh in cash.
The searches were executed at multiple sites across the district, such as his government quarter and office in Bhanjanagar, a relative's residence in Berhampur, and his ancestral property in Polasara.
The operation involved five teams of Odisha Vigilance, led by three Deputy Superintendents of Police and seven Inspectors, all acting under the authority of search warrants issued by the Vigilance Court in Berhampur.
During the investigations, officials discovered that Behera and his family owned a multi-storeyed building, five plots of land in various locations throughout Berhampur, and cash totaling Rs 18,90,800 (with Rs 15.13 lakh found at the Berhampur residence and Rs 3,72,800 at the government quarters in Bhanjanagar).
Additionally, gold ornaments weighing a total of 568 grams, which included 178 grams in gold coins, were seized, alongside bank, postal, and insurance deposits amounting to approximately Rs 90 lakh.
Among the notable assets, Behera was found to own an Ajax Argo 4300 concrete mixer machine acquired in 2024 for Rs 57 lakh, a Hyundai excavator purchased in 2025 for Rs 37 lakh, one car, three two-wheelers, and household items valued at around Rs 8.57 lakh.
