Bhubaneswar, May 30 (NationPress) The Odisha Vigilance has uncovered a staggering array of movable and immovable assets exceeding several crores, including Rs 2.52 crore in cash, during investigations at various locations associated with a senior engineer from the state’s Rural Development department, who is set to retire on Saturday, as reported by Yeshwant Kumar Jethwa, the Director of Vigilance.
On May 30, 2025, following allegations of disproportionate assets (DA) against Baikuntha Nath Sarangi, Chief Engineer of Plan Roads, RW Division in Odisha, Bhubaneswar, the Vigilance conducted simultaneous searches in Angul, Bhubaneswar, and Pipili in Puri.
In a surprising turn, as Vigilance officers approached, Sarangi was seen attempting to dispose of bundles of cash in Rs 500 notes through his flat's window in Bhubaneswar.
This cash was subsequently recovered by the Vigilance team's search party in the presence of witnesses. The anti-corruption unit found Rs 1.30 crore at his residential property in Angul and Rs 1.21 crore at his flat in Bhubaneswar during the coordinated searches.
The operation involved a team of eight Deputy Superintendents of Police, 12 Inspectors, six Assistant Sub-Inspectors, and additional staff, all acting under search warrants issued by the Special Judge, Vigilance, Angul.
In addition to the cash, the officials discovered two multi-storeyed buildings in Angul, two flats, and seven high-value plots in prestigious areas of Bhubaneswar and Angul, alongside insurance and bank deposits valued at Rs 1.5 crores, and investments in shares amounting to Rs 2.7 crores.
During a press briefing, Jethwa stated that the Vigilance Technical Wing is presently measuring and valuing the properties identified in the ongoing searches linked to Sarangi.
