Did a 5.7 Magnitude Earthquake Shake Ladakh & J&K?

Synopsis

A significant earthquake measuring 5.7 in magnitude has hit the Ladakh region, causing tremors across Jammu and Kashmir. While the earthquake raised concerns, there have been no reports of casualties or damage thus far. This event serves as a reminder of the region's seismic activity and its history with devastating quakes.

Key Takeaways

A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Ladakh region.
The epicentre was located in the Leh area.
Tremors were felt across Jammu and Kashmir.
No casualties or property damage have been reported yet.
Ladakh is known for its seismic activity.

Srinagar, Jan 19 (NationPress) A 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck on Monday at 11:51 AM, with its epicentre located in the Leh area of the Ladakh region. The tremors were felt across Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir with varying intensity. Mukhtar Ahmad, the Director of the local MET Department, confirmed the occurrence and provided the coordinates of the earthquake, which were latitude 36.71 north and longitude 74.32 east, occurring 171 kilometers below the Earth's surface.

The earthquake's tremors were experienced differently across various parts of Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir.

As of now, there have been no reported casualties or damage to property.

Both the Ladakh region and the Valley are situated in seismologically sensitive zones.

Recalling a significant past event, on October 8, 2005, a catastrophic earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 struck at 8:50 AM, centered in Muzaffarabad town of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). It devastated Muzaffarabad and affected nearby areas including Balakot in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and parts of Jammu and Kashmir.

This earlier quake registered a moment magnitude of 7.6 and reached a maximum Mercalli intensity of XI (Extreme), causing widespread destruction, not only in Pakistan but also felt in Afghanistan, Tajikistan, and the Xinjiang region. The extensive damage was attributed to significant geological upheaval.

Although this recent earthquake is not the most powerful in terms of magnitude for the region, it still raises concerns due to its historical context, echoing memories of the deadly 2005 quake that was considered the deadliest in the region, surpassing the 1935 Quetta earthquake.

The official death toll from the 2005 quake in Pakistan ranged between 73,276 and 87,350, with some estimates exceeding 100,000 fatalities. In India, the tragedy claimed 1,360 lives and left 6,266 injured, alongside four casualties in Afghanistan.

In total, approximately 3.5 million individuals were rendered homeless, and around 138,000 sustained injuries due to that quake.

Point of View

I emphasize the importance of staying informed about seismic activities in sensitive regions like Ladakh and Jammu & Kashmir. While today's earthquake was significant, the absence of casualties is a relief. However, it serves as a critical reminder of the potential for future events that can have devastating consequences.
