7.1 Magnitude Quake Hits Nepal; Tremors Felt Throughout Northern India

New Delhi, Jan 7 (NationPress) A significant earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale hit Nepal early Tuesday morning, producing tremors felt in numerous parts of Northern India, including Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim, and Delhi-NCR.
The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) confirmed that the earthquake took place at 6:35 AM (IST), with its epicentre situated at latitude 28.86 degrees North and longitude 87.51 degrees East, at a depth of 10 kilometres. The epicentre was found in Xizang (Tibet Autonomous Region), close to the border with Nepal.
On X, the NCS reported, "EQ of M: 7.1, On: 07/01/2025 06:35:18 IST, Lat: 28.86 N, Long: 87.51 E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Xizang."
Shortly after, two additional earthquakes were noted in the vicinity. A 4.7 magnitude tremor was detected at 7:02 AM (IST) with its epicentre at latitude 28.60 degrees North and longitude 87.68 degrees East, at a depth of 10 kilometres. Minutes later, at 7:07 AM (IST), another earthquake measuring 4.9 was registered at latitude 28.68 degrees North and longitude 87.54 degrees East, with a depth of 30 kilometres.
The tremors were intensely felt in parts of Bihar, leading residents to evacuate their homes and apartments in a state of panic. Fortunately, no injuries or damage to property have been reported thus far.
Nepal is located in a seismically active zone where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates converge. This tectonic activity in the Himalayas makes the country prone to frequent earthquakes.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) noted that the quake occurred 93 kilometres northeast of Lobuche, near the Nepal-Tibet border. Lobuche, situated close to the Khumbu Glacier, is approximately 150 kilometres east of Kathmandu and about 8.5 kilometres southwest of Everest Base Camp.
This seismic activity has raised alarms in the region, which has a history of devastating earthquakes. Authorities in Nepal and the impacted areas of India are keeping a close watch on the situation.
