Mild Earthquake of 4.8 Magnitude Strikes Nepal with No Reported Casualties

New Delhi, Dec 21 (NationPress) A moderate earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale rocked Nepal during the early hours of Saturday, as reported by the National Centre for Seismology (NCS).
The tremor, which took place at 3:59 AM Indian Standard Time (IST), was recorded at a depth of 10 kilometres below the Earth's surface.
NCS identified the earthquake's epicentre at Latitude 29.17° N and Longitude 81.59° E, an area recognized for its vulnerability to seismic events. Currently, there are no reports of injuries or major structural damage. However, local authorities are on high alert and are vigilantly observing the situation.
The NCS shared the quake's specifics on the social media platform X, stating, “Earthquake of Magnitude: 4.8, Date: 21/12/2024, Time: 03:59:03 IST, Lat: 29.17° N, Long: 81.59° E, Depth: 10 Km, Location: Nepal.”
Nepal is situated in a tectonically active region along the Himalayan fault line, making it highly susceptible to frequent earthquakes. This area experiences a continuous buildup of geological stress due to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates, which can result in both minor and major tremors.
The country has faced devastating earthquakes in its history, including the catastrophic 7.8 magnitude earthquake in April 2015 that resulted in thousands of fatalities and extensive destruction. This quake occurred at 11:56 Nepal Standard Time on Saturday, April 25, 2015, with a magnitude of 7.8.
While the tremor on Saturday was relatively mild, it serves as a stark reminder of the seismic hazards that the region endures.
Residents in the affected areas have been advised to stay vigilant and follow earthquake safety protocols, especially in case of aftershocks.
