32 Lives Lost as 7.1 Magnitude Earthquake Hits the Nepal-Tibet Border

New Delhi, Jn 7 (NationPress) A tragic event unfolded as 32 individuals lost their lives and 38 others sustained injuries due to a powerful 7.1-magnitude earthquake that struck the border region between Nepal and Tibet on Tuesday.

The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) indicated that the seismic event occurred at 6:35 AM (IST), with its epicentre located at latitude 28.86 degrees North and longitude 87.51 degrees East, at a depth of 10 kilometres. This epicentre was situated in Xizang (Tibet Autonomous Region), in close proximity to the Nepal border.

Reports from the Xinhua news agency confirmed that the earthquake resulted in 32 fatalities and 38 injuries in the city of Xizang.

Moreover, numerous instances of house collapses were reported in Tonglai Village, which is part of Changsuo Township in Dingri, within Xigaze, also recognized as Shigatse.

The tremors were felt across several areas in North India, including Bihar, West Bengal, Sikkim, and the Delhi-NCR region.

Subsequent seismic activity was recorded shortly after the initial earthquake. A 4.7 magnitude tremor was detected at 7:02 AM (IST), with its epicentre at latitude 28.60 degrees North and longitude 87.68 degrees East, also at a depth of 10 kilometres.

Minutes later, at 7:07 AM (IST), another quake measuring 4.9 in magnitude was registered at latitude 28.68 degrees North and longitude 87.54 degrees East, at a depth of 30 kilometres.

In Bihar, the tremors prompted residents to flee their homes in panic; however, no reports of casualties or structural damage have emerged thus far.

Nepal is situated in a region known for its seismic activity, primarily due to the collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The country frequently experiences earthquakes because of the tectonic movements in the Himalayan region.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) noted that the earthquake was located 93 kilometres northeast of Lobuche, near the Nepal-Tibet border. Lobuche is situated close to the Khumbu Glacier, approximately 150 kilometres east of Kathmandu and 8.5 kilometres southwest of Everest Base Camp.

The recent seismic events have raised alarm in the region, which has a history of severe earthquakes. Both Nepalese officials and authorities in the affected areas of India are diligently monitoring the situation.
