Former Karnataka minister and Congress MLA H.C. Mahadevappa, a senior Dalit leader and close associate of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, on Wednesday, 17 June flatly rejected corruption allegations levelled against him, calling them baseless and politically orchestrated to coincide with speculation over a Cabinet expansion in the state.

The Complaint Against Mahadevappa

A Bengaluru resident has submitted a formal complaint to Karnataka Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot demanding an independent probe into alleged financial irregularities during Mahadevappa's tenure as Social Welfare Minister. The complaint specifically alleges misuse of welfare funds, manipulation of tenders issued by the Karnataka Residential Educational Institutions Society (KREIS), fabrication of official records, and abuse of ministerial authority. No formal investigation has been announced by the Raj Bhavan as yet.

What Mahadevappa Said

In a detailed public statement, Mahadevappa — who has spent nearly four decades in public life — invoked the legacy of Dr B.R. Ambedkar in his defence, saying his entire political career had been guided by constitutional principles. 'For 40 years, I have conducted my political life in accordance with the Constitution and the ideals of Babasaheb Ambedkar. Hearing the baseless allegations now being made against me only makes me laugh,' he said.

He drew a pointed contrast between legitimate scrutiny and what he described as malicious propaganda, warning that criticism should not cross into 'false accusations, intolerance or political conspiracy.' He also recalled that Ambedkar himself endured persistent humiliation yet remained committed to public service — framing his own situation as a parallel test of resolve.

The Cabinet Reshuffle Backdrop

Mahadevappa did not hold back on the timing, suggesting the allegations were transparently timed to the ongoing Cabinet reshuffle discussions. 'The motive behind these allegations is so obvious that even children can understand it. People should understand the nature of these accusations and the reasons behind them,' he said. This comes amid broader speculation that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is weighing a significant Cabinet rejig, with several senior Congress leaders reportedly positioning themselves for ministerial berths.

His Record in Government

Pointing to his tenure as Public Works Minister, Mahadevappa said he oversaw the construction and development of nearly 30,000 kilometres of roads, bridges, and major infrastructure projects across Karnataka. He also highlighted his work as Social Welfare Minister, stating that he had framed laws and policies aimed at the welfare of Scheduled Castes and other marginalised communities. 'I focused on infrastructure development and public welfare, not on accumulating wealth,' he said.

The Governor's office has not yet responded publicly to the complaint. Whether the Raj Bhavan orders a formal inquiry — or refers the matter to the state government — will be closely watched given the political sensitivities around Mahadevappa's community standing and his proximity to the Chief Minister.
