Congress Admits Setback: 'Mahagathbandhan Would Have Won with MLAs' in Bihar RS Polls
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 17 (NationPress) The Mahagathbandhan coalition faced a notable defeat in the Bihar Rajya Sabha elections, primarily due to internal rifts and the absence of crucial MLAs. This situation has sparked a verbal clash between the opposition and the ruling NDA, simultaneously unveiling fractures within the alliance.
Bihar Congress State President Rajesh Ram admitted that the election results could have been more favorable had all alliance members been present and voted collectively.
“If they had shown up and rallied together, the INDIA bloc would have emerged victorious,” he stated to IANS, while also supporting Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's commitment to social justice. Ram suggested that some factions, including political rivals, felt threatened by this vision and criticized dissenting voices within the party.
The lack of Congress MLAs during the pivotal vote has also attracted criticism from inside the party. Congress MP Sukhdeo Bhagat described the incident as a worrying trend for democracy.
“It’s concerning for democracy when individuals compromise their beliefs, engage in cross-voting, or offer excuses due to monetary influence or other factors,” he remarked, noting that the party would assess the situation after reviewing internal reports.
In contrast, Samajwadi Party MP Awadhesh Prasad minimized the controversy, indicating that such occurrences are not uncommon in upper house elections.
“This type of situation is regular. Incidents like these are typical in Rajya Sabha and Legislative Council elections — it’s not a surprise,” he commented.
On the other hand, JD(U) MLC Neeraj Kumar attributed the NDA’s success to what he labeled as the opposition's internal conflicts.
Kumar took a jab at RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, asserting that the accusations he made were contradicted by statements from within the Congress itself.
“The NDA claimed victory, and Tejashwi Yadav's allegations were discredited by Congress MLA Manoj Bishwas. Bishwas indicated that when the party in-charge did not acknowledge the state president, he opted not to vote, exercising his right. If his statement holds true, then Tejashwi Yadav’s claims are erroneous,” he stated to IANS.
The outcome of the Rajya Sabha elections has not only given the NDA a political edge but has also raised serious concerns about the unity and coordination within the Mahagathbandhan.
