Christchurch, March 25 (NationPress) - South Africa's captain, Keshav Maharaj, praised the determination and drive of the younger players after the team achieved a 33-run victory against New Zealand in the concluding T20I match, securing the five-match series at 3-2 at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Wednesday.
After batting first, South Africa set a target of 187/4 in their allotted 20 overs, with Esterhuizen leading the batting effort. In response, New Zealand was dismissed for a mere 154 runs in 20 overs, resulting in a loss by 33 runs.
The Proteas initially trailed 2-1 after the first three matches but made an impressive comeback, winning the final two matches to claim the series. Maharaj emphasized that this victory will provide valuable lessons for the young players, many of whom were competing at the international level for the first time.
"This is an incredible chance for these youngsters to grasp the essence of international cricket. Coming here, not many gave our young squad much credit, but witnessing their hunger, desire, and passion to rebound from 2-1 and clinch the series is exceptionally rewarding. It highlights the depth of our system and how well the young players are stepping up," Maharaj commented during the post-match presentation.
"As I mentioned, starting with a 2-1 deficit was not our finest moment, but seeing these young talents shine and deliver two remarkable performances with the bat is something to be proud of. As captain and coaching staff, we can feel very pleased. Although we lacked experience, their performances indicated a smooth transition into international cricket despite the pressure they faced," he added.
Five debutants participated in this series as key players were rested following the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2026, where South Africa faced New Zealand in the semi-finals.
