Cairns, Aug 17 (NationPress) South Africa's seasoned left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj expressed his unwavering desire to secure a position in the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup, despite being left out of the recent T20I series against Australia.
Maharaj is among the five modifications to South Africa’s ODI lineup that will compete against Australia at Cazalys Stadium starting Tuesday, alongside captain Temba Bavuma, Wiaan Mulder, Matthew Breetzke, and Tony de Zorzi.
He missed South Africa’s recent Test victory over Zimbabwe due to a groin strain, but he assured that the injury did not influence his exclusion from the T20I matches, which the visitors lost 2-1.
“Yes, I’m available. I believe ‘Shuks’ (coach Shukri Conrad) wants to experiment a bit. He hasn’t shut the door, so I’m optimistic about getting a chance to demonstrate my abilities,” Maharaj stated to reporters in Cairns on Sunday.
Maharaj played a pivotal role in South Africa’s journey to the Men’s T20 World Cup final last year, where they fell short against India in Barbados. He participated in all 10 matches during the 2023 ODI World Cup held in India, capturing 15 wickets at an impressive economy rate of just 4.15, in a campaign that concluded with a semi-final defeat to the eventual champions, Australia.
With 16 T20Is lined up before the 2026 Men’s T20 World Cup takes place in India and Sri Lanka, Maharaj affirmed that he has no intentions of reducing his commitments. “Not at all. Not yet. The T20 World Cup in 2026 is crucial for me. For now, I’m excited to play three formats. I still have a passion for bowling, and as long as that passion remains, I want to compete in all three formats for my country and be a match-winner,” he added.
