New Delhi, June 9 (NationPress) As South Africa prepares to take on Australia in the International Cricket Council (ICC) World Test Championship final at Lord’s, left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj expressed his optimism that this could be the team's moment to claim a much-desired trophy.
Maharaj was part of the Proteas squad that finished as runners-up at the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and was also involved in the teams that reached the semifinals of both the 2023 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup and the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.
“In our previous attempts, we exceeded expectations by reaching the knockout stages, having made it to two semifinals and two finals. With all those near misses, I’m hopeful that this time we will succeed,” he stated.
“The brand of cricket we have showcased over the last three to four years serves as great motivation for us. If we stick to our game style, I believe this could finally be our chance to lift that most-coveted trophy that has been so elusive for us over the years.”
“I still remember the moment when they lifted the mace in 2012. We aim not only to achieve this for ourselves but also to honor the legends of the past, hoping that one day we will be regarded in the same light as them when we secure such a prestigious title and hold the Test mace,” Maharaj was quoted as saying by ICC on Monday.
South Africa entered the WTC final on the back of an impressive run of seven consecutive Test victories, finishing atop the points table. “When we began this journey two years ago, many doubted we would find ourselves in this position. However, with each series, we continue to grow,” he remarked.
“Our mix of youth and experience complements each other beautifully, putting us in contention for yet another trophy. The team has dedicated significant effort, and as the excitement builds, it’s crucial that we embrace the moment, allowing us to play freely,” Maharaj added.
On a personal note, Maharaj is just two wickets shy of achieving 200 Test wickets and recognized the importance of reaching this milestone at Lord’s. “It would mean a lot to me. While I don’t focus too much on the statistics, my primary goal is to contribute to the team’s success, so I’m hopeful for a ten-wicket haul,” he explained.
“My journey thus far has been rewarding, and I hope to continue for a long time. Achieving this milestone in front of my family at Lord’s would be incredibly special. Every cricketer has a bucket list of venues they aspire to play at, and this is a fantastic opportunity for all of us,” he concluded.
