New Delhi, June 5 (NationPress) In 2025, numerous teams have finally ended their long-awaited trophy droughts, and South Africa's Aiden Markram expressed his hopes that the Proteas can maintain this momentum as they face Australia in the World Test Championship Final, set to commence at Lord's on June 11.
The sporting landscape has seen significant victories, with cricket teams like the Hobart Hurricanes and Royal Challengers Bengaluru clinching their inaugural BBL and IPL titles. Similarly, in football, Paris Saint Germain, Crystal Palace, Bologna FC, Tottenham Hotspur, and Newcastle United FC have also ended their lengthy trophy shortages.
This positive trend bodes well for the South African squad, who have yet to secure any major men's cricket silverware. Markram stated, "(There's) not much chat along those lines in terms of watching the other events, but hopefully that trend can continue.
"We've been striving for this for many years as a team. Across all formats, our performance has shown slight improvement, and we've had opportunities to seize victories. If we can position ourselves well during the five-day Test match, we will push hard for a win," Markram shared with ICC Digital.
He emphasized that every team member has clarity in their roles as they prepare for the crucial match against the defending champions, Australia. "It’s a collective effort for each player to showcase their best skills. This will be a challenging game.
"Facing Australia in a Test match with a Dukes ball at Lord’s presents its own set of challenges, but ultimately, the players possess the skill sets that got them selected and have performed well throughout the cycle. It's about leveraging our best skills against theirs and seeing where that leads us at the end," Markram added.
As they prepare to confront Australia, South Africa has based themselves in Arundel, where they are engaged in a warm-up match against Zimbabwe, before heading to Lord's, where former England fast-bowler Stuart Broad will join them as a consultant.
"The atmosphere is positive, with plenty of excitement in the air. I'm sure as the game approaches, nerves will start to kick in. We are well aware of the Australians, their skill levels, and their character traits.
"It's always a match we eagerly anticipate, and we generally rise to the occasion. I have no doubt this time will be any different," concluded Markram.
