Mumbai, April 10 (NationPress) In an effort to tackle the escalating housing dilemma faced by the increasing population of Mumbai, Maharashtra's Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, has instructed the local administration to create and execute a solid framework for affordable rental housing.

Recognizing the surge of individuals relocating to Mumbai for job opportunities and entrepreneurial ventures, the Chief Minister also advocated for the establishment of a specialized portal to facilitate the process for residents.

During a strategic meeting, Chief Minister Fadnavis underscored the necessity of affordable rental solutions for those moving to Mumbai and other significant urban centers.

He emphasized that the framework should function based on demand and supply, guaranteeing that residents can secure housing within their financial means.

"The system must ensure that all transactions adhere to legal agreements. Coordination is crucial to prevent difficulties for both landlords and tenants," stated the Chief Minister.

To enhance and enforce the Maharashtra Rent Control Act, 1999, Chief Minister Fadnavis issued several pivotal directives aimed at empowering authorities, scalability, formal notifications, expedited legal resolutions, special courts, evening courts, and necessary infrastructure.

"Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCPs) will be designated as competent authorities under the Act. The framework should be designed such that as police jurisdictions expand, the number of qualified police officers will increase accordingly. Official notifications will be issued to incorporate these duties into the DCPs’ formal responsibilities," remarked the Chief Minister.

Acknowledging the considerable backlog of rental disputes, Chief Minister Fadnavis proposed a comprehensive strategy to expedite the resolution of pending cases through the establishment of 100 Special Courts dedicated solely to rental-related legal issues.

Retired judges will be appointed to oversee these courts.

"With the approval of the court, we will introduce 'Evening Courts' to accelerate the resolution of long-standing cases. If there is no available space for these courts, the state government will lease premises to ensure immediate operations," the Chief Minister added.

Point of View

The initiative led by Chief Minister Fadnavis is a crucial response to Mumbai's pressing housing challenges. By advocating for affordable rental options and enhancing the enforcement of existing laws, the government showcases its commitment to addressing the needs of a growing population. The establishment of special courts aims to expedite legal processes, which is essential for maintaining tenant-landlord relations and ensuring housing stability.
